What to expect with Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation procedure

Runners knee

Knee pain procedure

Most common type knee pain comes from Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is losing joint space and cartilage that causes pain and swelling in the knee. Treatments include steroid injections and exercise or even knee replacements to help with knee pain. In the last couple years, a new treatment called Radiofrequency Ablation is available.

What is Radiofrequency Ablation

The idea is to block the nerves that innervate the joints so no longer feel the pain signals travel from the knee joint. We can identify 3 of these joints.

The Nerve block procedure

The needles goes next to where the nerves and heats up and destroys the nerve just at that location so the pain pain signals are blocked to travel the brain. It can last 8-16 months until the nerves grow back and can repeat the procedure as needed.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation

The benefit is that it can help reduce pain, as well as maintain knee strength and control. It doesn’t alter the anatomy and patient can still pursue a knee replacement surgery. This is good for people who have tried conservative things like injections and exercise but still have knee pain. It’s not for the person who actively having an injection or has inflammatory arthritis.
