Trigger point for neck pain relief

Neck pain relief

The Three main muscle Groups

Pain in back of the neck and head is due to a tension in muscle from our neck muscles or what most people call a muscle knot in their neck. There are three main muscles that cause this tension and pain in back of their head.

  • Trapezius Muscle
  • Levator Scapulae muscle
  • Sternocleidomastoid muscle

Trapezius muscle

It originates from the base of the head and it inserts into the outer third of the collar bone. When there is excessive tension of the upper Trapezius, it will keep tugging at the base of the head. May cause headaches in back of the head, but can radiate all the way until behind the eyes.

Levator Scapulae muscle

Originates from the side of the neck and inserts into the inner tip of the top part of the shoulder blade. When people get tensed up they tend to kind of elevate their shoulders causing excessive tension in the muscle Levator Scapulae (LV). It originates from the side of the neck and can cause a lot of tension in the side of the neck. A lot of knots can appear where the neck joins the shoulder pain.

Levator Scapulae

Sternocleidomastoid muscle

Tight neck and back muscles can cause constant pain. The injected area here is usually the upper Trapezius. He was just by sitting watching T.V., all of sudden has an onset of pain in the shoulder. The pain actually causes some  sudden sharp or ’paralyzing’ pain.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

We like to use an Osteopathic Technique what some people may call Acupressure. The swelling on the neck can sometimes be visible. The physician will apply pressure with the thumbs long enough until he feels the muscle underneath the tense area. If it doesn’t hurt, the thumb is not on the right place.

Muscle tightness relief

The muscles can be pretty tight as pressure is applied, until some relaxation can be felt under the thumb. If the patient has no allergies, we can proceed.

Back Spasm

Freezing spray until it builds frost. An injection of the needle in parallel and it can hurt. We inject the medication. The muscle will experience some spasm. The twitching is called the twitch response, which is a local muscle contraction and something we are interested in eliciting, because it follows relaxation of the muscle.

Typically 1 1% Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that may burn. It may be useful to apply some stretch to that muscle after the injection.
